Tips to protect your business data
Network Titan Can Protect Your Business Data - man with encryption and cybersecurity icon overlays

The recent cyberattacks on corporations highlight the rising risk of data breaches and the importance to protect your business data. For businesses of all sizes, a data breach is awful, potentially leading to massive financial hardship, reputational damage, and lost customers. If you are a law firm, accounting firm or an engineering or architecture company, the information in this blog will help you with some basic strategies to strengthen your data security posture and allow your San Diego business to thrive in today’s complex and dynamic threat landscape.

Use two-factor authentication (Do it! it works!)

On it's own, using a long, complicated password to secure your system is NOT an effective way to protect your business data. And the reason is, having to memorize a difficult password often pushes users to set that same complex password for multiple accounts. And if a hacker gets their dirty little hands on a recycled password, there’s a high probability they could access all accounts using that password.

You've heard this a hundred times by now; two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your systems and accounts. 2FA can be set up in many forms; like biometric verification in the devices that you own or a time-sensitive auto-generated code sent to your mobile phone. This security feature works a lot like how websites require you to confirm your email address verify that you are not a bot.

Encrypt To protect your business data

Encryption thwarts hackers! It scrambles and descrambles data every time someone  reads it. Encryption disrupt retrieval if the data is not being accessed via a company’s own networking systems. While applying encryption can be expensive, it is well worth the money because your data is protected if it falls into the wrong hands.

Keep security patches and sytems up to date

Many companies don’t install software updates immediately (UGH!). This is a huge problem because hackers are always upgrading their tools to take advantage of outdated applications and the newest known attack vector. By always installing updates as soon as they are out, you close existing (and known) security holes and keep your data better protected.

Back up frequently and then back up again

Redundancy and implementing several layers to your security doesn’t guarantee that hackers won’t find their way into your systems, but it will help you exponentially if this occurs. It's imperative to back up data frequently, whether it’s on site, off site, or by way of cloud backups. In the worst-case scenario, where you get hacked or infiltrated, if configured correctly, you should be able to restore and resume your operations.

Monitor connectivity

Many businesses don't know how many of their devices are connected online at a given time. This makes it very hard to keep track of which device should actually be online. Sometimes, a company’s computers and servers are online for no reason, making for tempting and easy targets for attackers. Network Titan can configure business servers properly to ensure only necessary machines are accessible and that they’re well secured at all times. Our monitor service constants checks for unusual activity so your medical or biotech company is protected from cyber threats.

Recovering from a data breach is much more expensive than preventing one.
